Game Notes: 2 man Free-For-All

I haven't figured out why this free-for-all game works, yet. I've never been able to run a very successful "every man for himself"-style game. Nevertheless, we're running this game on our field more and more often recently, especially as a last game.

Observations

  • People you release early will go farther into the play area than people released later. The last pair that you release will find cover just inside the boundary, no matter how far away everyone else is.

  • Because people want to avoid being overrun by pairs coming in after them they tend to push the boundaries a LOT. It's ok to set larger boundaries for this game provided you have the space, especially if it's the last game of the day.

  • As you run this more times with the same players the general strategy will shift from predominently "hide and ambush" to "hunt and sneak." It will also have a tendency to make that transition during a single game itself.

  • This is one game where it's easy for you to slip in and play because it requires next to no refs. (No respawns!) Blow the whistle to start the game and then pull your trigger to start the game for yourself. Players love the surprise and fun of playing against the field owner and get bragging rights if they're one of the ones to take even one HP off of you. Just make sure that you're sneaking and hunting, rather than hiding.

Administration Suggestions

  • If you have an odd number of players send a ref (or yourself!) with the partnerless player. This game doesn't require as many refs as other games do.

  • While you have a bunch of people out in the field playing this at the end of the day start packing up. You can even send a (very careful) ref to pick up things on the field.

  • Ending with a FFA (especially on mobile events) lets you pack up the guns slowly, as they come back to you and eliminates the line of people waiting in line to give you their gun.
